City Lights

Eating, drinking, dancing – in the main towns of Crete you can party late into the night just as you might do at home. The difference is, over there the balmy temperatures never dip far enough to give you even the slightest chill.
And if you like the quieter life, the old towns of Crete offer a tremendous range of attractions especially for you. Gourmet restaurants, boutique shopping and a vibrant café culture mean that there’s an endless choice of urban delights to explore.
 
History
As the birthplace of European civilisation, Crete oozes with historical treasures. Make this island your home and take the opportunity to visit the many ancient Minoan sites scattered across the mountainsides and coastline. You could even visit the ruins of the fabled city of Knossos home of the legendary Minotaur of Greek myth.
With later artefacts traversing periods of Roman, Venetian and Ottoman rule – Crete supports a wealth of archaeological digs hoping to unearth another missing piece of this remarkable island’s history.
 
Gorge Walking
Crete is home to some of the most impressive walking terrain to be found in Europe. You’ll find there are numerous excursions particularly across the plateaus of Western Crete. And here you’ll have the chance to explore the awe-inspiring gorges that cut deep into the land surface.
Samaria gorge is one of Europe’s great natural wonders. It forms a 10-mile gorge, decorated with magnificent geological formations and flower-strewn cliff sides. It’s an inspiring adventure to take on.
 
Mountaineering
Formed out of an explosive geological past, the mountains of Crete’s interior provide a vigorous challenge for climbers of all skill levels. Sheering skyward to heights of up to 2,456m there are several imposing ranges across the island and you’ll encounter numerous climbs that have been established now for many years.
Crete’s three mountaineering clubs at Heraklion, Chania and Rethymnon have set up several shelters on various peaks. Join one of these clubs and you’ll soon discover the very wildest corners of this incredible environment
Water sports
As you’d expect from a Mediterranean island, water sports are exciting past time to experience in Crete. From swimming to scuba-diving, water-skiing to wind-surfing, and from yachting to paddle canoeing – there are several clubs to join on the island, catering for all ages and all competencies
 
Skiing
Skiing in Crete is possible on the small ski runs on Lefka Ori and on the larger MountIdi. January and April are the best months to take to the slopes, so contact one of the island’s mountaineering clubs you’ll receive a warm welcome to join one of their trips
