The tranquil island paradise in the sun

Imagine an island unspoilt by over-development, with mile after mile of breathtaking scenery. Picture a place steeped in history and a home to unique traditions. If that sounds like your perfect idea of a place in the sun, Crete’s the ideal destination for you.
What’s on the surface really does count
Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. And with 1,100km of rugged coastline, it’s home to a population of around 500,000. Travel across the island and you’ll experience the truly spectacular. Two thirds of the land surface is mountainous and there are a total of 57 peaks over 2,000m in height.
You’ll find Crete is lush and green. It sustains a plentiful agricultural industry, producing 13 million olive trees, sweeping vineyards and numerous citrus plantations. This island’s an incredible environment to behold.
The romance of antiquity
An investigation into Crete’s history exposes an impressive, colourful past. Home of the ancient Minoans, the fathers of European civilisation, Crete went on to become immortalised by Homer in The Odyssey. Homer made his ‘fair and fruitful island’ the birthplace of Zeus, king of the gods.
How remarkable heritage gave birth to the melting pot of today
In 68BC Crete was subdued by the Roman Empire, which later brought Christianity to the island. However, by the end of the first Millennia, the Byzantine armies had begun their 300 year domination - a period ended with the fall of Constantinople in 1204, when Crete was sold to the Ventians.
You’ll find there’s still a treasure trove of Venetian influence in Crete. And the same can be said of the Ottomans who sacked the island in 1669. Turkish rule brought about a long period of bloodshed here. And when the imperial nations came into power in 1898, colonial rule was a disaster. Further hardship led to the revolt of 1905, inspired by Eleftherios Venizelos.
Venizelos went on to become Greek Prime Minister, winning Cretan independence and securing its union with Greece following the Balkans War in 1913.
The island that awaits you today
Modern day Crete is a tranquil paradise, punctured with pockets of thriving excitement. It’s a popular destination for tourists, but you‘ll be delighted to discover the development of tourism has been undertaken on only a small scale. So as not to impinge of the natural beauty of Crete, strict planning laws ensure no building construction is allowed over 6 storeys. As a result, property value has risen consistently over recent years.
There’s so much to marvel at on this enchanting Greek island, it makes for both a wonderful home and an investment with great potential. Keep reading to see why, Crete may be the overseas property hot spot you’re looking for.
